On 29 June 2021, Drupal.org announced that support for all applications running Drupal 8.x will end 2 November 2021. In concurrence, Acquia will also end support for applications running Drupal 8.x on 2 November 2021.
After 2 November 2021, there will be no new projects, bug fixes for existing projects, or documentation for Drupal 8.x from the Drupal community. Additionally, the Drupal.org security team will not provide Security Advisories for Drupal 8.x after that date. You should consider Drupal 8.x an insecure application after 2 November 2021.
Q: Is there any action required on my part?
Yes. If your application is currently using Drupal 8.x, you will need to take immediate steps to update your application so that your application is upgraded by 2 November 2021. While your application will continue to function beyond 2 November 2021, every day that your application is on Drupal 8.x past 2 November 2021, you risk the security of your files and data and that of your customers.
Q: What is the deadline for this upgrade?
Acquia cannot guarantee Drupal 8 compatibility with Acquia’s Cloud Platform after 2 November 2021. Drupal 8 core, contributed, and custom modules may have dependencies on technology stack components that could be upgraded or removed to maintain Acquia’s platform security and compliance certifications. Acquia’s compatibility testing will be limited to Drupal 9 and above so such platform changes may impact Drupal 8 application functionality or availability. In such cases, upgrading your application to Drupal 9 may be your only available remedy.
Acquia will continue to assist customers with Drupal 8 sites as part of our standard Support services until 2 November 2021. This includes providing diagnostic support for Drupal Application issues and working to ensure that Acquia Cloud supports Drupal 8 sites. After 2 November 2021, Acquia will no longer provide support services for Drupal 8 applications.
Note: Drupal 7.x applications are supported by Drupal.org until 28 November 2022. Additionally, Acquia is part of a group of vendors who are committed to provide D7.x extended support, which is slated to run until November 2025.
We encourage all of our customers to upgrade Drupal 8 applications to Drupal 9 well before Drupal 8’s end of life date to avoid unexpected complications.
Q: Do you have any documentation to assist me with my upgrade?
For additional resources to assist with your upgrade, please see our blog post, "How to Prepare Your Drupal 8 Site to Move to Drupal 9."
Q: Will there be any downtime for my non-production environments or production application?
This will depend on your development approach to upgrading your application. With careful planning and testing, you should be able to avoid any downtime for your production application.
Q: Can Acquia help me migrate from Drupal 8.x to Drupal 9.x?
Custom engagements are available from Professional Services for customers looking for assistance with migrating Drupal 8.x sites to Drupal 9.x. For additional information please contact your Account Manager.
Q: Are there other major software upgrades on Acquia Cloud coming soon?
We are committed to maintaining the security and stability of the Acquia Cloud platform. To do so, we are consistently removing software that has reached end-of-life and adding new features on an ongoing basis. We work to provide as much lead time as possible whenever this happens, in order to ensure your application runs smoothly while these upgrades and retirement efforts are underway. For more information on other upcoming retirements, please see our Software End-of-Life Schedule.
Q: I have some additional questions and concerns. Who can I contact?
