In November 2021, Acquia will end support for the Acquia Lightning distribution. In an effort to support our customers as they remove the Lighting profile from their Drupal applications, we have provided the following instructions and information.
Q: When will support for Acquia Lightning end?
Support for Acquia Lightning will end in November 2021. At that time, the Lightning distribution will no longer receive security support, bug fixes, or feature improvements. This applies to all versions of the Lightning profile, including versions 3, 4, and 5.
Q: Does this apply to Drupal 9?
Yes. This applies to both Drupal 8.x and Drupal 9.x applications.
Q: Will my Drupal application, which currently relies on Acquia Lightning, experience a service interruption or otherwise stop functioning when support for Lightning ends?
The end of support, and even removing the Lightning profile itself, from your Drupal application will not remove or deactivate any of the features your application relies on because those features are provided by Lightning components (e.g., Lightning Workflow, Lightning Media, etc.). The "full Lightning package" is not required for these individual components to continue working.
Acquia Lightning's individual components will still be supported until at least Drupal 9's end-of-life in 2023. As a result, those features will continue to operate with your application, just like any other installed modules. Like those modules, these individual feature components will continue to receive bug fixes and security updates.
Q: How do I remove Lightning from my Drupal application?
You should ask your development team to uninstall the Lightning profile, using the process documented here. This process will remove your application's dependency on Lightning without affecting your application's look or functionality in any way. Once the Lightning profile is uninstalled, you'll be able to update Drupal core and contributed modules without waiting for a new version of Lightning.
The uninstaller utility is already available in the most recent version of Acquia Lightning, so if your preference is to uninstall the Lightning profile now, you can do so by following our documentation for more information.
Q: Does uninstalling Lightning involve code changes?
Yes, but in most cases the changes are minimal, and most of them can be handled automatically by our uninstall utility. Our documentation provides a detailed outline of the steps required.
Q: Do I need to update to Lightning 5 and Drupal 9 in order to uninstall?
No. The uninstaller is available in the latest versions of Lightning 3, 4, and 5. You will only need to update Lightning to the latest minor version using your normal process. If your application is using Lightning 3.4, for example, you don't need to update to Lightning 4 or 5 to do the uninstall procedure.
Q: Can I switch directly from Lightning to Acquia CMS?
No direct migration path is currently planned from Lightning to Acquia CMS, so at this time it is not possible to migrate directly from Lightning to Acquia CMS.
Q: I have additional questions. What do I do?
